The Medtech Industry’s Shift from CMO to CDMO—An MPO Videobites

More and more, medical device OEMs are enlisting the assistance of contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs).

Released By Roechling Medical

The outsourcing dynamic in medical device manufacturing is experiencing a transition. Traditionally, medtech OEMs would have a design house perform early development work and then transfer it to a contract manufacturing organization (CMO) for the full production phase. As challenges were realized during that transfer, along with growing interest in design for manufacturing guidance, companies began to seek contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs) to keep all aspects of the lifecycle under one roof.

Several advantages can be realized from this collaboration. To help further explain those benefits and provide insights on the complete process, two engineers from Roechling Medical took part in this Videobites. Josh Luther, Senior Product Process Engineer, and Chris Reuling, Process Engineer, speak about the drivers of this change, their preferred starting point when working with a customer, and the steps in the product development stage.
