Integra LifeSciences has its board chair Stuart Essig has been appointed president and CEO. Essig took office on May 1 and succeeds Mojdeh Paul, who is pursuing other opportunities.

The company also revealed that Michael McBreen, currently executive VP and president of Codman Specialty Surgical, was appointed chief commercial officer.

Essig boasts over thirty years of experience in the medical technology and healthcare industries. He has served as Integra’s board chairman since June 2012 and as a director since 1997. Essig was the company’s CEO from 1997 through early 2012, and its president from 1997 until 2010.

“I am honored to once again serve as Integra’s president and CEO,” said Essig. “I return with a clear mandate from the Board and a long-term commitment to lead the company through its next chapter. In my role as executive chairman, I have seen firsthand the strength of our team and the meaningful progress underway across our priorities, particularly in quality, compliance, operational resilience, and the transformation of the organization.”

Michael McBreen was appointed chief commercial officer, a newly created role at Integra. In this role, McBreen will elevate the commercial organization and ensure customer and market-facing opportunities are central to how the company operates and makes decisions.

“Mike is exceptionally well-suited for this role with deep commercial relationships,” Essig said. “He brings more than thirty years of commercial experience in the medical technology industry, and his appointment is an important part of how we move forward. This is a strategic leadership step that will help sharpen execution, strengthen our connection to our customers and markets, and support stronger performance across the Company. Integra intends to lead this next chapter with urgency, transparency, and a clear focus on execution.”

In November, the company gained U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for use of its CUSA Clarity ultrasonic surgical aspirator system for cardiac surgeries. The new indications cover debridement of unwanted tissue in cardiac surgeries, including valve replacement and repair.
