Johnson & Johnson has begun an agreement to acquire Atraverse Medical, a privately-held company pioneering next-gen left-heart access and radiofrequency (RF) technology.

Atraverse’s Hotwire transseptal access system is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-cleared RF guidewire and generator system used for more confidence and control when accessing the left atrium. The system features impedance-sensing automatic energy shutoff, compatibility with multiple sheaths, and clear tip visibility under intracardiac echocardiography.

Achieving safe and precise access to the left atrium remains one of the most pivotal steps in atrial fibrillation (AFib) detection.

This acquisition seeks to bolster J&J’s portfolio of cardiac ablation solutions, giving electrophysiologists tools to treat patients with AFib and other cardiac arrhythmias. The deal’s financial terms were not disclosed.

The Hotwire transseptal access system has already been used in almost 3,000 procedures. Earlier this month, Atraverse shared new clinical and preclinical data that further validate the safety, performance, and workflow advantages of its Hotwire system.

The findings demonstrated reduced unintended tissue injury, low radiofrequency (RF) duration, and consistent performance across diverse procedural workflows, reinforcing the clinical value of Hotwire’s impedance-guided technology and zero-exchange approach to left-heart access.

Earlier this week, J&J earned CE mark approval for its Ethicon 4000 stapler, an advanced surgical stapler engineered for reliable staple line integrity for a variety of tissue thicknesses.
