Johnson & Johnson MedTech has launched the Dualto energy system, an electrosurgical generator that combines multiple energy modalities into one platform for open and minimally invasive surgery.
Dualto can be paired with J&J MedTech’s Service Solutions to support uptime and is engineered to work with the company’s Polyphonic Fleet software application for device management. It was also designed for future use with the company’s Ottava robotic surgical system.
The electrosurgical generator offers the choice of powering monopolar, bipolar, ultrasonic, and advanced bipolar instruments, including J&J MedTech’s Harmonic and Enseal devices. According to the company, Dualto’s modular design and flexible architecture create up to 46% less footprint compared to separate generators.
It’s touted as the first, only surgical energy system available in a double configuration—two surgeons can work on a complex procedure and activate simultaneous energy from one electrosurgical unit.
Dualto uses proprietary Adaptive Tissue Technology to boost performance of advanced energy devices. The technology responds intelligently to changing tissue conditions, regulates energy delivery for better temperature management, and offers tone changes and user signals. According to J&J, Harmonic 700 and Harmonic Focus+ instruments transect thick tissue up to 18% and 25% faster respectively when powered by Dualto.
It can store personalized profiles for different surgeons and procedures, supporting faster setup and adjustments through custom energy settings.
“The user-friendly touchscreen of the energy system simplifies setup, and it allows my team to configure the system to fit my preferences and the specific procedure,” said Maie St. John, MD, Ph.D., Professor and Chair, Department of Head and Neck Surgery in Los Angeles. “The design not only helps to reduce setup time and saves space in the OR, but it also streamlines troubleshooting with on-screen prompts and ultimately can improve our surgical energy workflows.”
Dualto is designed to work with J&J’s Polyphonic Fleet, a software application to help oversee capital equipment. Polyphonic Fleet can inform Dualto’s status for software upgrades and routine maintenance needs, and offers instructions remotely.

We are excited to empower healthcare teams with capabilities for more connected OR devices.”
Last week, J&J announced manufacturing, research and development, and technology investments of over $55 billion in the U.S. over the next four years in its Innovative Medicine and MedTech businesses.
