CMR Surgical’s Supratim Bose announced he has stepped down as CEO because of personal reasons, in order to be able to return to Singapore. He will move to the role of vice chairman of the company’s board.

The Cambridge, UK-based robotic surgery company has appointed Massimiliano Colella as its interim CEO. Colella joined the CMR Surgical in 2023 as chief commercial officer.

Bose originally joined CMR Surgical about a month before he became CEO in March 2023. According to the company, he supported the business on its journey to bring minimal access surgery to more patients around the world.

“I have worked with reputed organizations in the MedTech industry for over four decades and I can say it has been a privilege to lead the CMR organization,” Bose told the press. “It is now time for me to transition into a Board role as Vice-Chairman of the CMR Board, and Massimiliano is the best person to take over my responsibility. I am pleased that we have someone of his caliber to lead the business as we continue our growth journey. With Massimiliano leading the business, a disruptive product, and exceptional people in the business, I am confident that CMR can transform surgery for good for all surgeons and patients around the world.”

Colella joined CMR Surgical from leading hospital group Evercare Group, where he was group CEO and a board member. He oversaw 30 hospitals, 16 clinics, and over 100 diagnostic centers in this role.

He touts more than three decades of senior healthcare leadership experience. Colella held senior executive roles at Johnson & Johnson and Smith+Nephew. At J&J, among several roles, he was responsible for all Medical Device companies in the Central Eastern Europe and Emerging Markets regions.

“I am honored to lead CMR and make sure we can seize our opportunity to offer hospitals and patients choice when deciding to start a surgical robotics program,” Colella said. “I have worked for large medical device businesses, and a hospital group, but this is a truly unique opportunity to lead a Company that has exceptional people, and an excellent product. Having conducted over 26,000 procedures, the value of Versius as a compact, digitally driven system has been demonstrated globally and gives us an excellent base to build on from here. We will always continue to focus on our customers, and by doing so I am confident that CMR and Versius will be able to achieve its mission of transforming surgery for patients around the world.”

Last month, CMR Surgical also appointed Markus Bauman as chief legal & business affairs officer, and Michelle Paknad as senior VP of global business development.
