Baxter has added Jeffrey (Jay) A. Craig, former executive chair and CEO of Meritor Corporation, to its board of directors. Craig will also join the company’s audit committee.

The appointment, effective today, raises Baxter’s number of board members to 12.

As Meritor’s chair and chief exec, Craig led a global supplier of drivetrain, mobility, braking and aftermarket solutions for commercial vehicles. He rose through ranks of increasing leadership there: controller, chief financial officer, and president and chief operating officer.

Before his stint at Meritor, Craig served as president of GMAC Commercial, a $10 billion financier to the manufacturing, garment, and private aircraft industries. He began his career at Deloitte, completing his tenure as an audit partner and audit practice leader in the company’s St. Louis office.

“We are excited to welcome Jay to Baxter’s board,” said José (Joe) E. Almeida, chair, president and CEO. “As a former CEO, CFO, COO and public company auditor, Jay’s broad-based business leadership and operational expertise will be a tremendous complement to our current board membership.”

Jay Craig’s appointment follows Baxter’s announcement last month that the company began a deal to sell its Vantive kidney care business to global investment firm Carlyle in a $3.8 billion deal.
