MD&MW News: Cortland Biomedical Expands Weaving Capabilities

Cortland Biomedical has announced the expansion of its weaving capabilities by incorporating the additional Jacquard Looms. This enhances the company’s capabilities and opens new options for advancements in medicals textiles. 
 
Cortland Biomedical is a full-service biomedical textiles product development partner that provides access to a wide range of global engineering, design and manufacturing capabilities.
 
The company specializes in plain and narrow weave fabrics, including shuttle and rapier weaving. Cortland Biomedical creates three-dimensional structures for vascular grafts and other applications. 
 
Woven designs are specifically created for vascular and abdominal aortic aneurysm grafts and ensure limited blood flow. Designs are also useful in orthopedics for soft tissue and bone repair due to its high strength and flexibility.

The additional two Jacquard Looms enable Cortland Biomedical to manipulate individual warp ends to create intricate structures, including multi-layer fabrics, bifurcations, convergences, and tapers. The Jacquard Looms are fully electronic and offer flexibility in altering fabric structures and patterns, reducing material and time prototyping. 
 
The looms can weave thoracic size tubular grafts up to 46mm in diameter to create bifurcated, tapered, flat, and tubular structures. Looms use electronic let-offs to manage fine denier yarns, and has the ability weave structures with low permeability and high density using reorbables, polyesters, aramids, and other prominent fibers in the medical device space.
