Johnson & Johnson MedTech revealed it’s working to accelerate and scale artificial intelligence (AI) for surgery with NVIDIA. The partnership aims to increase access to real-time analysis and global availability of AI algorithms for surgical decision-making, education, and collaboration in the connected operating room. The duo began a memorandum of understanding to progress AI for J&J MedTech’s surgical technologies portfolio with NVIDIA’s AI platform for healthcare. They said the technologies can allow fast, secure, real-time AI deployment through J&J MedTech’s digital surgery ecosystem. Using AI for surgery involves advanced edge computing to allow localized data processing in the OR, which is necessary for AI algorithms to analyze live and stored surgical data in real-time. It can also help reduce transfer of sensitive data and let specific applications run separately in the secure computing environment for low latency in the OR. The NVIDIA IGX edge computing platform and Holoscan edge AI platform create an infrastructure to deploy AI-powered software applications in the OR. “One of the major challenges in scaling AI for surgery is the closed design of surgical technologies,” said Shan Jegatheeswaran, VP and global head of digital, J&J MedTech. “Bringing advanced edge computing hardware and software to the OR enables scalability of innovation and new AI-powered solutions for clinical decision-making, education and training, and collaboration—with the ultimate goal of advancing patient care.” “Johnson & Johnson MedTech is advancing healthcare toward a future that’s more connected and personalized,” added Tim Schmid, executive VP and worldwide chairman of J&J MedTech. “This future will be increasingly enabled by digital technologies that deliver efficiency, inform decision-making, and extend surgical training and education. Our deep heritage in healthcare and digital ecosystem in surgery and NVIDIA’s AI platforms hold enormous potential to create a more connected surgical experience.”
