Microbot Medical completed the first procedure in a patient using its Liberty endovascular robotic surgical system. The surgery occurred at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) as part of the company’s pivotal human clinical trial.
The BWH trial is led by Dr. Dmitry Rabkin, MD, Ph.D., assistant chief, Division of Angiography & Interventional Radiology, who also performed this first human case. The trial is part of the IDE for Liberty and Microbot anticipates the results will support future FDA submission and subsequent launch.
“Enrolling the first patient in our pivotal human clinical trial is a significant milestone for the Company, and an important step on our journey to bring LIBERTY to U.S. physicians,” said Juan Diaz-Cartelle, MD, chief medical officer of Microbot Medical. “We are very pleased with the rapid pace of site activation, and I’m looking forward to enrolling additional patients in the near future.”
The investigational Liberty endovascular robotic surgical system aims to improve how surgical robotics are used in endovascular procedures.
The system aims to remove the need for large, cumbersome, and expensive capital equipment. It also aims to reduce radiation exposure and physical strain. Microbot believes Liberty’s remote operation could be the first system to democratize endovascular interventional procedures.
Earlier this year, the company released positive outcomes from its pivotal pre-clinical study using the Liberty system. Microbot also welcomed a new chief medical officer in February 2024.
