BD Opens New Maryland Innovation Center for Diagnostics

BD (Becton Dickinson) has opened its new BD Innovation Center, collaborating with University of Maryland BioPark.
 
The innovation center will offer University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) students and researchers state-of-the-art equipment to accelerate diagnostic technology innovation. The center aims to provide tools to streamline clinical lab workflows and boost patient care through expanding diagnostic knowledge, developing new diagnostic capabilities, and providing real-world feedback on early diagnostic concepts.
 
“The addition of the BD Innovation Center to the UM BioPark will not only support our thriving life sciences sector, but also help Maryland remain one of the most innovative states in the nation,” Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill told the press. “This collaboration will ensure that our future workforce is prepared to tackle the technologies and challenges of tomorrow. We are very grateful to BD for its continued investment in Maryland.”
 
The BD Innovation Center will house the BD COR PX/GX automated high-throughput diagnostic system, which leverages robotics and sample management software algorithms for infectious disease molecular testing. The BD MAX system also housed there will address mid-throughput molecular applications, including clinically validated assays and open system to develop sample-to-answer assays.
 
The BD BACTEC FX there will offer state-of-the-art blood culture detection of organisms. Finally, A BD Phoenix M50 for ID/AST will provide sample-to-answer identification and determinations of antimicrobial susceptibility.
