Renal Dialysis Equipment Market Fueled by COVID-19 Equipment Shortages

Following reports that some COVID-19 patients are experiencing kidney failure, concerns are growing over the short supply of dialysis machines. While the number of these patients is currently small, GlobalData, a worldwide data and analytics company, expects the production of more dialysis machines will be required to meet the imminent demand. Prior to the pandemic, the renal dialysis equipment market, led by Fresenius, was set to reach $2.5 billion by 2028.
 
Aliyah Farouk, Msc, a medical devices analyst at GlobalData, commented: “The global market for renal dialysis equipment is fragmented with limited players. Leading companies Fresenius and Baxter are expected to benefit from the increased demand. The companies have recently boosted the capacity and production for their dialysis equipment with Fresenius doubling the volume of consumables and Baxter hiring thousands to boost the supply of equipment.”
 
The renal dialysis equipment market is driven by the increasing prevalence of kidney disease, reflecting an ageing population and the rise of conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Additionally, the shortage of organ donors and the high risks involved with kidney transplantation is also propelling the market. 
 
Farouk added: “The need for dialysis machines is more essential than ever. The anticipated increasing number of COVID-19 patients requiring dialysis treatment will inevitably boost the market. The pandemic has raised the threat of equipment shortage and supply chain deficiencies. Other hospital resources are likely to reach capacity in the coming weeks. However, the conservation of vital lifesaving equipment such as dialysis machines must be prioritized.”
