Smiths Medical Glucose Monitoring System Recalled

CoZmonitor system no longer has any compatible testing strips on the market.

Smiths Medical ASD Inc. has voluntarily recalled its CoZmonitor blood glucose monitoring system. The reason is no more sinister than that the test strips that are used with the monitoring system are no longer available. The notification specified that the CoZmoniter is not compatible with any other test strip on the market.

When asked why the test strips are being discontinued, Smiths company spokesperson Terry Servais told Medical Product Outsourcing that the strips are outsourced to a different company and the decision to discontinue them was their’s. A clinical customer service representative added that there is now a universal strip on the market, but since it has not been tested on the CoZmoniter, it cannot be used with the system.

The notification advises people in possession of a CoZmonitor but are not using it to dispose of the machine in an environmentally safe manner. For patients who are using the CoZmonitor and have no more strips left, the notification advises disposal of the system immediately and to obtain an alternative method of monitoring blood glucose levels.

Smiths Medical is part of the United Kingdom-based company Smiths Group plc. It provides medical devices for hospital, emergency, home and specialist environments. Its products are used during critical and intensive care, surgery, post-operative care during recovery, and in home infusion therapies.

The company has informed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of the CoZmonitor withdrawal.
