MedPlast Acquires UPG

Complementary technologies, expanded global footprint and engineering synergies enhance single-source supplier capabilities.

MedPlast Inc. has acquired United Plastics Group Inc. (UPG). UPG is a manufacturer of precision plastic products and value-added services for the medical, industrial and datacenter markets, with operations in the United States, China, Mexico and Wales.

The addition of UPG’s technological expertise and global footprint represent an ideal complement to MedPlast, according to Harold Faig, CEO of Tempe, Ariz.-based MedPlast.

“The combination of MedPlast and UPG represents tremendous opportunities for both firms and for our customers,” Faig said. “MedPlast’s enhanced global footprint and added technical capabilities will bring powerful synergies to customers looking for creative solutions to their design, development and manufacturing challenges.”

The pairing of complementary technologies is a primary factor behind the acquisition, added Matt Langton, vice president of Sales and Marketing of UPG. MedPlast’s expertise includes injection molding, blow molding, silicone extrusion, compression and transfer molding, liquid injection molding, two-shot molding, over molding, insert molding, multi-component molding, and precision mold making.

“UPG brings a wide range of value-added capabilities to the table, including partial- and full-assembly, contract sterilization, lab services as well as global supply chain and logistics management,” said Langton.

Having state-of-the-art facilities in China, including precision mold making, will increase options for MedPlast customers, officials from both companies noted.

MedPlast recently added silicone extrusion technology to its suite of services specifically with its its healthcare industry customers in mind.

The combination of MedPlast and UPG creates a global footprint with nine manufacturing locations in the United States, four in China, one in Mexico, and one in Wales. This now includes precision mold making in both North America and China.

“The acquisition of UPG further enhances our position as an integrated, one-stop supplier for the healthcare and non-medical product markets,” Faig said. “More than ever, we will offer our customers the efficiencies, support and expertise of a complete solutions provider. Our company’s ability to provide a spectrum of innovative services, superior technical support, cost-control and the added convenience of our single-source supplier status represents tremendous value for our customers.”

MedPlast’s manufacturing capabilities include multi-shot molding, elastomeric molding, specialty mold manufacturing and complex product assembly. Its facilities are based in Tempe, as well as Elkhorn, Wis.; West Berlin, N.J.; Westfield, Pa.; and Monticello, Iowa.
