Biocoat Introduces Three New Coating Solutions

Horsham, Pa.-based coatings manufacturer Biocoat has produced three new hydrophilic coatings for use in medical devices. Hydrophilic coatings dissolve readily in water, so they are resorbable. The new coatings join the Hydak coatings line, which is Biocoat’s flagship product line.

The first coating is the HydroSleek2, featuring enhanced processing and biocompatibility when compared to the previous HydroSleek lubricious coating. The second one is the HydroSleek Kit, a transportation solution for the coatings products. The third one is the Hydak T-040 Kit, which is made from another classic coating called Hydak L-110 that is extensively available in the European and Asian markets.

The Hydak coatings consist of hyaluronic acid, which has a high molecular weight. According to Biocoat, the coatings can be used on urology, ophthalmology, neurovascular, endoscopy and cardiology devices, including catheters, balloons, guide-wires and stents. Some substrates that are highly compatible with the coatings are polyesters, polyimides, polyethers, polyurethanes, and silicones that have been plasma treated, as well as metals. The base coat applied between the coating and device is acrylic-based, also provided by Biocoat. A heat-cure method is involved in HydroSleek coatings, making it possible for both the outer diameter and inner diameter of a device to be coated.

In a press release, Biocoat expressed the intention to use these new Hydak products as its “front line solution” for medical device companies that are continually seeking to reduce friction in their products.
