Second Life Biomedical Expands Beyond Original Intended Reach

The subsidiary of Dixie Medical provides medical equipment repair services.

Dixie Medical, a small, family-owned cardiovascular device company based in Brentwood, Tenn., has founded a subsidiary company that will provide device repair and maintenance service for clients. Also based in Brentwood, Second Life Biomedical originally was founded earlier this year to service Dixie’s defibrillator customers only, but now the company has expanded to serve infusion pumps, suction units, vital signs monitors, ventilators and other medical equipment. Second Life also serves fire departments and EMS services nationwide.

President of Second Life Matthew Spencer said this expansion was a natural move.

“For over a decade, we have outsourced our service to experienced and trusted biomeds in different locations,” he said. “Now we have two full-time, certified biomedical engineers in our building. This reduces shipping expenses and time in transit, which improves our overall level of service to our customers.”

Medical equipment maintenance and repair are becoming more important as equipment owners such as hospitals and clinics seek to extend the life of their devices. Tightening budgets have dramatically affected the purchase of new capital equipment, and it is becoming increasingly important to companies and device users to not only save money but also have less of an impact on the environment.

“We are seeing more and more organizations repairing aging medical devices rather than purchasing new ones due to financial constraints,” Spencer said. “By properly maintaining devices according to manufacturer guidelines, the useful life of a device can be easily extended.”

Dixie Medical has manufactured defibrillators and other medical equipment for more than 13 years.
