West and Janssen Biotech Collaborate on Injection Technology

The two companies will join forces on a self-injection drug delivery system.

Lionville, Pa.-based West, manufacturer of components and systems for injectable drug delivery, will collaborate with Janssen Biotech Inc. in the development and manufacture of a self-injection product. The technology has been developed by Janssen, and is designed to facilitate self-injection of pharmaceutical and biologic drug products. West intends to market the technology under the brand name SelfDose.

West will take on the responsibility of the commercial scale-up and manufacture of the product, and will be permitted to offer SelfDose injection technology as part of its expanding portfolio of self-injection technology platforms. West already offers ConfiDose and SmartDose injection technologies, and offers a solution for improved manual injection. The goal for SelfDose, according to West officials, is for it to provide an effective drug container and delivery system for safe, effective and reliable delivery of medication, especially when the administrator is not a healthcare professional but a patient.

“We are delighted to have formalized our relationship with Janssen Biotech around this drug delivery platform and look forward to working together to commercialize the SelfDose injection technology, providing manufacturing, development and regulatory support through the remainder of the process,” said Donald E. Morel Jr., Ph.D., West’s chairman and CEO.

Janssen Biotech produces technology for the immunology, oncology, and nephrology markets, and is based in Horsham, Pa.
