Finding new ways to cut down on possible contamination in the hospital setting will always attract attention, not just for its impact on patient care, but also for its help with the bottom line.

In that vein, single-use surgical instrument manufacturer DTR Medical launched its new Cervical Biopsy Punch with Rotation at Medica trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Officials for the United Kingdom-based company said they worked with leading clinicians to develop the instrument, which is designed to remove the risks of cross contamination that occur when re-using hard-to-clean instruments on patients undergoing cervical cancer biopsies.

The nylon-based trigger handle and metal jaw were developed using the most advanced materials, techniques and expertise available, DTR Medical claims. The shaft and inner rod—made from stainless steel—actuate the jaw, ensuring no movement or flex occurs and enabling clinicians to make a sharp, clean cut.

“With the sheer volume of cervical biopsies taken every year—around 1.5 million in Europe—this device has huge potential,” said Andrew Davidson, managing director of DTR Medical. “The combination of its cross contamination-eliminating properties, precision cutting and highly competitive pricing means we are expecting significant interest from healthcare markets across the globe.”

The Cervical Biopsy Punch is on display at Medica through Nov. 17 in Hall 16, Stand F30.
