CareFusion is shipping 4,500 ventilators to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to be included in the national stockpile, according to the firm.

The CDC made the order for the strategic national stockpile, which is the nation’s reserve of medical products used in the event local supplies are depleted during a severe public health emergency, such as an earthquake, terrorist attack or influenza outbreak.

“Years of research and clinical input have gone into the development of the LTV 1200 to create a portable, easy-to-use ventilator that can adapt to a wide variety of circumstances,” said David Schlotterbeck, chairman and CEO of CareFusion. “This is our largest order ever for this product, and we are pleased to assist the CDC in the event of a national emergency.”

CareFusion previously supplied California and New York with LTV 1200 ventilators as part of their emergency preparedness programs.

The CDC and American Association of Respiratory Care have partnered to offer a webcast training module to show doctors and first responders how to use the LTV 1200 in an emergency.
