Reason is dispute over proposed medical device tax.

St. Jude Medical Inc. has withdrawn its membership from the Advanced Medical Technology Association in Washington, D.C., and its CEO, Daniel Starks, has resigned his seat on the board.

The St. Paul, Minn.-based medical device OEM made the decisions, in a Nov. 2 letter to AdvaMed President Steven Ubl, based on a dispute over a proposed healthcare reform tax on device manufacturers. AdvaMed has proposed a tiered approach to a device tax, based on the complexity of the device.

The letter said it is “inappropriate for AdvaMed to advocate for a specific policy that economically advantages a portion of its membership at the expense of other members.”

AdvaMed was not immediately available for comment.
