Natick, MA-based Boston Scientific has acquired privately held EndoTex Interventional Systems of Cupertino, CA for a device used to prop open diseased carotid arteries.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

The centerpiece of the acquisition for the medical device manufacturer is EndoTex’s NexStent carotid stent system, which recently received FDA approval.

The NexStent is used in the carotid artery, the main blood vessel that supplies the head and neck with blood. Diseased carotid arteries that have become congested with plaque significantly raise the risk of a stroke.

The FDA approval for the NexStent was based on a study where the stent was used along with Boston Scientific’s FilterWire EZ embolic protection system, a filter-like device placed downstream during vascular procedures to catch any debris that may become dislodged.
