Siemens Branch to Cut Oncology Care Systems Jobs

A unit of Siemens AG is cutting more than 100 manufacturing jobs in Concord, CA between now and September, but it is not clear if additional reductions are being planned, according to the Contra Costa Times.

The 120 Concord jobs are being eliminated as part of an effort to consolidate Siemens Oncology Care Systems Group with existing Siemens operations in Germany.    

The oncology unit develops and produces radiation therapy medical devices designed to combat cancer by using a variety of advanced technologies. Among the devices are hardware employed in linear accelerators used for oncology care.

The oncology operation, a unit of Siemens Medical Solutions of Munich, Germany, had about 344 workers at the end of 2006, said Christine Foy, a spokeswoman for Siemens Medical.

Despite the loss of the manufacturing jobs, the headquarters of Siemens Oncology will remain in Concord with limited manufacturing activities, Foy said.

The company anticipates that the kind of manufacturing jobs that will be jettisoned are related to supply-chain management, product management and research and development. The kinds of jobs likely to remain include positions with the executive management team, finance, strategy, sales and marketing, and service support.
