Once again, I find myself wandering the many halls of the Medica and CompaMed trade events. Between checking out the latest and greatest from the medtech elite, discovering new firms displaying their first products at the show, or catching up with those I’ve met before, I took a moment to reach out to representatives at several companies exhibiting at the medical device gathering this year. Hopefully, these questions provide useful information for anyone unable to meet with them at the event or those who are not headed to Germany this year. With that in mind, Sean Egan, director of global marketing at Nelipak Healthcare Packaging, shared the following insights to help you determine if the firm is a potential services partner for you in 2020 or beyond. Sean Fenske: What technology or service are you emphasizing at Medica/CompaMed this year? Sean Egan: This year, Nelipak has a special focus on Bemis Healthcare Packaging—our newest addition to the Nelipak family. Nelipak and legacy Bemis will come together in booth 8A/M01 to demonstrate our complementary product range encompassing rigid trays, coated lid stock, pouches, roll stock and more. Our teams look forward to discussing our enhanced capabilities with the addition of packaging alternatives for the healthcare market with customers—both new and existing—during the show. Fenske: What’s the most common challenge customers inquire about and how do you address it? Egan: For Nelipak it is two things: package integrity and sustainability. Customers need the reassurance the package will not only protect their device to point of use, but will also maintain the sterile barrier to point of use. Manufacturers are looking to reduce their footprint to minimize waste in the overall package. Nelipak has developed a number of tools that address these concerns while reducing time to market and costs. Fenske: If you could give one piece of advice to companies seeking a manufacturing partner before they make a decision, what would it be? Egan: Choose your manufacturing partner carefully; it’s important to work with a partner who understands both your needs and the market dynamics, particularly with the changes the new MDR and IVDR regulations are bringing to both devices and packaging. Equally important is a partner that takes your project from design through to finished product with the widest choice of options and solutions at your disposal. Fenske: What are the forces driving medical device manufacturers to seek your technology/services over doing it in-house? Egan: Nelipak’s experienced in-house design, development, prototyping, manufacturing, and quality teams offer medical device manufacturers the widest choice of packaging options and industry experience. Fenske: In what ways is your company able to aid in getting a product (project) to market faster? Egan: Our new simulation process is one example. It reduces design churn through predictive models, which increases confidence in the success of packaging through integrity testing, while reducing time to market through less prototyping and tooling iterations.
