Launches From the Land of Palms

Brazilian firms debuting innovations in heart health, pedicle screw design at Medica 2016.

Brazil is celebrating its 15th anniversary at Medica this year with some very special gifts: New product launches in cardiology and orthopedics.

Nearly four dozen healthcare companies are attending this year's event, held Nov. 14-17 in Düsseldorf, Germany. The firms are members of Brazilian Health Devices, a project run by the Brazilian Medical Devices Manufacturers Association (ABIMO) in partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brazil).

One of the companies debuting new products at Medica is Corcam Tecnologia S.A., developer of technology (Nexcor) that uses resident software to autonomously, remotely and automatically read the electrical signals of a patient's heart through electrodes. The signals are processed using algorithms, producing an electrocardiogram that is then sent to a Nexcor Monitoring Center, where cardiologists confirm the diagnosis and adopt the necessary treatment measures. At Medica, Corcam is launching NX3L and two new ehealth products for remote cardiac monitoring that are in the final stages of development. The NX3L has already been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Studies conducted by the Institute of Education and Research of the Heart Hospital (Instituto de Ensino e Pesquisa do Hospital do Coração–HCor), found that the Nexcor system has a "high potential" as a screening tool for cardiovascular events, particularly for its automatic detection of electrocardiographic changes.

Watch the video below for more details about the clinical evidence associated with Corcam's Nexcor technology:

Corcam is planning to open U.S. offices next year.

Neoortho is using the high-profile Medica platform to introduce a new product as well, launching the Neospine Cannulated Pedicle Screw. A news release from ABIMO claims the Neospine device helps the company expand its pedicle screw portfolio and gives physicians an additional way to treat low bone quality, osteoporosis, and/or congenital deformity cases.

Traumec is giving the medical world a first look at its NeuroEndoview Plus, an instrument (cannula) to access lesions deep within the brain. The cylindrically-shaped device features a set of dilators that help create an entry orifice, which is less aggressive to brain tissue, is faster, and offers surgeons a greater field of view. Company executives claim the NeuroEndoview Plus is less traumatic to brain tissue than rival products, which typically are elliptical and lack the ability to dilate brain tissue before introduction. In addition, the instrument can be used with an optic guide, allowing doctors to observe details in the brain tissue slated for surgery, thus improving the patient's chances of post-operative recovery success.

Traumec was founded in 2007 through the union of metal mechanic entrepreneurs with more than 20 years of experience.

Taking a bow from Estek Tecnologia em Produtos is Facebox, a third-generation version of the Carbtek Advanced machine, and equipment for carboxitheray and its flagship product. The Facebox, according to Estek, is equipment that standardizes facial photographs using special optics designed to prevent reflections and deformations, allowing for color ultra-violet fluorescence photography that reveals porphyrin. Facebox also features an adapter that is compatible with virtually all smartphones, enabling use of the system's free software.

Estek has been active in the Brazilian market for more than 30 years, assisting professionals in the areas of medicine, aesthetics, physiotherapy, podiatry, hair, dentistry and mechanics/quality control.

The Brazilian contingent at Medica is exhibiting in Halls 3 (laboratory equipment), 4 (physiotherapy and orthopedic devices), and 17.
