TransEnterix Inc. has developed a new set of minimally invasive tools for laparoscopic procedures. The Spider MicroLap instruments include all the tools familiar to surgeons, but in a smaller size. Each instrument is 2.7 millimeters or less in diameter rather than the standard 5 to 10 millimeters in diameter. According to the Morrisville, N.C.-based company, the tools advance the field of laparoscopic surgery to micro-laparoscopic surgery because they eliminate the need for an open incision. The Spider MicroLap instruments also are re-useable. The tools are made from a proprietary ceramic-titanium alloy to ensure strength despite the small diameter. They can be used independently or with the Spider Surgical System.
