A line of medical-grade, precision polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-coated stainless steel or nitinol-forming mandrels used to make stent delivery systems is available from Applied Plastics Co. Inc., based in Norwood, Mass. Applied PTFE natural coated mandrels are non-flaking and provide a smooth anti-stick surface that can withstand up to about 550 degrees Fahrenheit, with excursions to about 700 degrees Fahrenheit, the company said. Designed to prevent sticking and simplify catheter removal in fuse welding and tipping operations, these stainless steel or nitinol-forming mandrels exhibit a 0.05 coefficient of friction per ASTM-1894. The mandrels are available in sizes from 0.004 inches to 0.070 inches outside diameter, according to Applied Plastics.
