Stryker Names Carpenter to New Quality Position
Stryker Corp. has created a new position to oversee quality at the Kalamazoo, Mich.-based orthopedic device manufacturer, and it has named Lonny J. Carpenter to fill that role, according to the firm. His official title is group president of global quality and operations.
Two of the letters, which referred to a Stryker plant in Ireland, were regarding defective hip implants, and the third faulted the New Jersey plant’s handling of compliance issues with medical device reporting procedures and documentation used to approve medical implants.

CardioAQ Valve Technologies Elects Director
CardiAQ Valve Technologies has elected Nancy Briefs as a director, according to the Winchester, Mass.-based developer of self-conforming and self-anchoring technology for transcatheter mitral valve implantation.
Briefs is president, CEO and a director of privately held Elemé Medical, based in Merrimack, N.H., a venture-backed aesthetics company that provides technology for body shaping. During her more than 25 years in the medical technology industry, Briefs has held executive roles at firms such as Carlsbad, Calif.-based Vista Medical Technologies; Target Therapeutics, which was acquired by Natick, Mass.-based Boston Scientific Corp.; Abbott Laboratories, based in Abbott Park, Ill., and Irvine, Calif.-headquartered American Edwards Laboratories.
In addition, she is a former director of Direct Flow Medical, a medical device maker in Santa Rosa, Calif., that is developing a percutaneous aortic tissue valve prosthesis, and is an inventor on four issued and three pending U.S. patents related to cardiovascular innovations.
“Nancy has strong ties to the medtech industry in general and the cardiovascular sector in particular,” said Brent Ratz, CVT’s co-founder, president and CEO.
Voss Joins Vidacare Corp. as Senior Vice President
Michael Voss has joined Vidacare Corporation as senior vice president for its vascular access business unit, according to the San Antonio, Texas-based firm.
Voss will oversee the strategic business growth and management of the EZ-IO Vascular Access System business unit, supervising and directing its global expansion.
Voss most recently served as vice president and general manager of the Vascular Interventions Division at Spectranetics Corporation, a minimally invasive device manufacturer, in Colorado Springs, Colo. He also has held positions with vascular access device manufacturer Bard Access Systems, based in Salt Lake City, Utah; Cordis Corporation (a Johnson & Johnson company) based in Bridgewater, N.J.; and Natick, Mass.-based Boston Scientific, among others.

Delcath Systems Names Chief Financial Officer
Delcath Systems Inc. has appointed David McDonald as chief financial officer, according to the New York, N.Y.-based firm that specializes in cancer treatment therapies.
McDonald previously served as senior vice president of business development at AngioDynamics Inc., a company that focuses on minimally invasive devices. The firm recently relocated its headquarters 44 miles south, from Queensbury, N.Y., to Latham, N.Y.
Before joining AngioDynamics, McDonald founded and led Cornerstone Healthcare Advisors LLC, a Minnesota-based advisory and consulting firm. He spent three years providing consulting services to emerging medical technology companies before joining AngioDynamics in July 2008.
Prior to the founding of Cornerstone Healthcare Advisors, McDonald worked as a managing director of medical technology investment banking at RBC Capital Markets in Canada, where he developed relationships with leading private, public and venture capital firms in the medical device and diagnostics industries.
Earlier in his career, McDonald was a senior vice president and equity portfolio manager at Investment Advisers Inc., as well as a research analyst who covered the healthcare industry for more than a dozen years.
“David brings a broad base of business knowledge to Delcath,” said Eamonn Hobbs, Delcath’s recently-appointed president and CEO. “He has an extensive financial and business development background and understands the dynamics of commercializing new technologies, international licensing, marketing and strategic development. We are excited to have David on board. He will be an asset to our team as it prepares for Food and Drug Administration submission by mid-2010, gains CE Mark approval and pursues strategic relationships with outside parties.”
The CFO role at Delcath has been vacant since December 2008, when Paul Feinstein resigned to pursue other interests.
Pyng Medical Corp. CFO, Corporate Secretary Resigns
Steve Law has resigned from the positions of chief financial Officer and corporate secretary at Pyng Medical Corp., according to the Vancouver, British Columbia-based firm. Executives did not give a reason for Law’s departure.
The resuscitation device maker is searching for Law’s replacement. Until a replacement is found though, President and CEO Robert Di Silvio will assume the additional duties, according to the company.

Voss Joins Vidacare Corporation as Senior VP
Michael Voss has joined Vidacare Corporation as senior vice president for its vascular access business unit, according to the San Antonio, Texas-based firm.
Voss will oversee the strategic business growth and management of the EZ-IO Vascular Access System business unit, supervising and directing its global expansion.
The EZIO system uses power driver and bevel-tipped needle sets for access to deliver vital fluids and medications to interior bone. It is used when traditional vascular access is difficult, according to the company.
Voss most recently served as vice president and general manager of the Vascular Interventions Division at Spectranetics Corporation, a minimally invasive device manufacturer, in Colorado Springs, Colo. He increased sales there more than 23 percent in 2008, according to Vidacare. Voss also has held positions with vascular access device manufacturer Bard Access Systems, based in Salt Lake City, Utah; Cordis Corporation (a Johnson & Johnson company) based in Bridgewater, N.J.; and Natick, Mass.-based Boston Scientific, among others.

Still River Systems Names Jachinowski as CEO
Still River Systems Inc. has appointed Joseph K. Jachinowski as its CEO and to its board of directors, according to the Littleton, Mass.-based proton beam radiotherapy system maker.
IMDS Names President, CEO
Innovative Medical Device Solutions’ (IMDS) board of directors has named Brady Shirley as the company’s president and CEO.
Since 2006, Shirley has served as senior vice president of Stryker Endoscopy and president of Stryker Communications, a division of Stryker Corporation, based in Kalamazoo, Mich. He spent the last 17 years in various management, sales and marketing roles.
IMDS board members chose Shirley to run the company based on his experience leading a complex organization as well as his strong executive skills and his personal qualities, said Wade Fallin, former IMDS president and CEO who is still serving on the board.
“Shirley came to our attention because of his strong execution skills, his proven ability to lead top-performing teams and his track record in driving shareholder value, particularly through innovation,” Fallin said. “His straightforward style and exceptional people skills are a perfect fit with the IMDS culture,” he added.
