Putnam Plastics, based in Dayville, Conn., has developed technology for producing thin-walled, large
diameter, low durometer urethane extrusions, which provide medical device OEMs with increased design freedom and production capabilities, according to the company. The firm has implemented a combination of custom equipment and advanced processing conditions. Improved pro-cess stabilityresults in a larger design envelope for device engineers and improved material handling techniques reduce costs by increasing yields and product quality, company officials said. After fabrication, advanced handling techniques allow the finished components to move on to the next stage of manufacturing without defects or contamination. This capability is applicable across a range of custom extrusion designs with the greatest impact in outside diameters greater than 0.5 inches and wall thicknesses of less than 0.015 inches in urethane durometers lower than 90A. This new capability can be integrated into designs that feature coextrusion, multi-lumen and/or wire reinforcement. Putnam Plastics is a supplier of co-extruded polyimide, multi-lumen, braded and thin-wall multi-layer tubing, as well as sheathing for fiberoptic tubing.
