The Erlangen University Clinic (Universitätsklinikum Erlangen), the Erlangen-Nuremberg Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU), and Astrum IT have cooperated to develop a mobile laboratory that monitors patients' gaits via sensors fitted in their shoes. The system will optimize diagnostics and treatment for Parkinson's disease. The project is named eGaIT (Embedded Gait Analysis using Intelligent Technology). A prototype was presented at the MEDICA HEALTH IT FORUM exhibition area (Hall 15, Stands 15E48, 15E56 and 15E60). The specific challenge in developing this project was that each person has a different, individual gait and that each persons' gait also varies depending on how they feel on the day. Now, the use of sensor technology and pattern-recognition processes has enabled the eGAIT researchers to overcome these challenges.
