Medical device recalls reached their highest level in at least 16 years last fall, rising 29 percent to 339 in the third quarter of 2016, according to a report from Stericycle's Expert Solutions business. Recalled units also skyrocketed 187 percent to nearly 116 million—making Q3 2016 the worst three-month period for recalled units since the third quarter of 2012.

Stericycle's report claims that software and mislabeling were responsible for 48.1 percent of medical device recalls. In addition, 47 percent of recalls were international—the lowest level in the last four years. Moreover, 50 companies experienced more than one recall in Q3 2016, the highest number since the first quarter of 2014.
