Royal Philips has welcomed a new member to its executive team.
The company named Shez Partovi to its Executive Committee; his appointment took effect on March 22. He will succeed Jeroen Tas as chief Innovation & Strategy officer on July 1, reporting directly to Philips CEO Frans van Houten. Tas will work with Partovi before the latter formerly assumes the position.
Philips also announced that Rob Cascella, currently Strategic Business Development leader and formerly in charge of Philips’ Diagnosis & Treatment segment, will step down from the Executive Committee as planned, effective April 1, to begin the process of retiring from the company. Cascella will act as a special advisor to Philips’ strategic business development projects on a part-time basis until the end of the year.
“On behalf of Philips’ Executive Committee, I am very pleased to welcome Shez Partovi as our new chief Innovation & Strategy officer,” said van Houten. “Shez brings deep healthcare and informatics experience to Philips, which will be highly relevant as we accelerate the transition to becoming a solutions leader, leveraging deep clinical insights and big data analytics. I want to thank Jeroen and Rob for their very valuable contributions to the transformation of our company. Jeroen played a very important role in inspiring and executing our strategy for digital health and healthcare informatics, while Rob has contributed a wealth of experience and successfully shaped our Diagnosis & Treatment segment.”
Partovi, 53, joins Philips from Amazon Web Services (AWS), where he served as worldwide head of Business Development for Healthcare, Life Sciences and Medical Devices. In that role, he was responsible for the global AWS go-to-market strategy, charting the path for customer cloud transformation, and the adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Prior to joining AWS in 2018, Partovi spent 20 years at Dignity Health, the fifth largest health system in the United States. He started his career in 1998 as a neuroradiologist at the Barrow Neurological Institute and was in clinical practice until 2013. In addition to his medical training at McGill University in Montreal, he has post-graduate qualifications in computer science. Partovi has a passion for learning and teaching. He helped launch the Biomedical Informatics Department at Arizona State University and taught there as a clinical professor for three years.
Leading the company’s global Innovation & Strategy organization, Tas is responsible for M&A strategy planning, R&D, solutions design, medical affairs, sustainability, technology platforms, ventures and emerging businesses. Creating a pipeline of innovative business propositions he leverages emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, sensing technologies and the Internet of Things to reinforce the company’s health propositions aimed at supporting consumers, care professionals and health systems with personalized connected health solutions.
Tas joined Philips in 2011, leading IT worldwide as group chief information officer (CIO). In 2014 he became CEO of Philips Healthcare, Informatics Solutions & Services, overseeing digital health and clinical informatics. From 2016, Tas led the company’s Connected Care and Informatics businesses, demonstrating a passion to create new models of people-centric healthcare, based on the power of information technology.
Before joining Philips, Tas co-founded and served as president, chief operating officer and vice chairman of the board for MphasiS, an IT and business process outsourcing company, which was acquired by HP in 2006. Prior to MphasiS, he was the head of Transaction Technology Inc., Citigroup's tech lab, responsible for the innovation and development of the bank’s customer-facing systems, including Internet banking and self-service devices. From 2007-2008, he was vice president and general manager at EDS, responsible for the company’s global competency centers.
Tas is the 2004 winner of the E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Information Technology category for the New York region.
