Applied Medical, a global medical device company, has expanded its European operations with the opening of a new 20,000-square-meter manufacturing and R&D facility at its European headquarters in Amersfoort, The Netherlands. True to Applied Medical’s vertically integrated business model, European team members will design, develop and manufacture the company’s medical devices in-house with distribution to customers across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
“As a company, we are committed to delivering on our customers’ demand for high quality products that improve surgical outcomes while helping to reduce the overall cost of healthcare,” said Robert van der Meer, president, Applied Medical Europe. “We are able to achieve this by directly managing our manufacturing processes, which provides us with complete control over our product quality and development costs.”
Applied Medical has already showcased its strong commitment to in-house manufacturing with over 90,000 square meters of manufacturing space at its U.S.-based corporate headquarters in Southern California. The company established its European headquarters in Amersfoort in 2006, and has now expanded its presence to incorporate manufacturing, including injection molding, automated assembly, packaging, and labeling.
The new facility opening will also provide a boost to Amersfoort as Applied Medical plans to significantly increase their number of team members, adding more than 100 team members in the next 12 months. The company has already been hiring team members for its manufacturing and engineering teams, and is actively recruiting in key areas including production (manufacturing operations), maintenance (mechanical and automation) and process engineering, and is still hiring in numerous other areas.
“Amersfoort is a wonderful city with a diverse and skilled population. We’re excited to grow our team and continue to make a meaningful, positive impact here in Amersfoort and in all of the countries we serve,” continued van der Meer.
Earlier this month, Applied Medical team members and local leaders in Amersfoort celebrated the grand opening of the new facility. At the event, guest speakers Lucas Bolsius, mayor of Amersfoort, Willibrord van Beek, commissaris van de koning of Utrecht, and Said Hilal, CEO of Applied Medical talked about the importance of the new manufacturing facility to the community and Applied Medical’s customers. Attendees viewed firsthand the equipment and processes for manufacturing medical devices for minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery. Product shipments to customers will begin this month.
Applied Medical provides technologies for a wide range of surgical specialties, such as general, colorectal, gynecology, urology, bariatric, and obstetric surgery. As a new generation medical device company, Applied Medical is equally committed to improving the affordability and accessibility of high-quality healthcare.
