Flex has announced that John Carlson has been appointed president of Flex Medical Solutions.
Carlson joins Flex from Johnson & Johnson, where he spent the past 15 years in leadership roles related to medical device research and development, most recently as vice president of the Innovation Portfolio. In this role, he was responsible for assessment of an $8 billion research and development budget, across the pharmaceutical, medical device and consumer health segments of the company, while creating processes to identify and invest in new growth areas.
Previously, Carlson held progressively responsible leadership positions at Johnson & Johnson, including worldwide vice president of research and development for the Ethicon Endo Surgery group, where he led the design and development of surgical and medical devices, and for the Diabetes Care franchise. The decade prior to joining Johnson and Johnson, Carlson held research and development positions of increasing responsibility with medical device startup companies in the San Jose, Calif. area.
“We continue to steadily grow our medical device portfolio while expanding the sketch-to-scale model of our medical business,” said Paul Humphries, president of High Reliability Solutions at Flex. “John is the ideal candidate to lead this growing operation, with his extensive experience as a long term member of the J&J management team, and deep industry knowledge and expertise across all aspects of medical product development. We are very pleased to welcome John as president of the Medical Solutions group at Flex.”
Carlson holds a bachelor of science degree in bioengineering and a master of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California, San Diego.
