PTI Engineered Plastics Inc. is expanding into world of additive manufacturing/3-D printing. The company recently purchased a Lumex Avance-25 machine, which—according to PTI—is capable of manufacturing complex molds and parts by direct metal laser sintering without the need for secondary finishing processes.
Macomb, Mich.-based PTI will use the Lumex hybrid technology of additive manufacturing plus high-speed milling to grow high-precision, finished mold inserts.
Some of the added benefits of the Lumex, PTI officials noted are:
• The 3-D conformal cooling channels, which will shorten the cooling cycle reducing mold time in the press;
• Gas venting: The sintering can be precisely controlled, thus reducing gas traps; and
• Deep slots can be machined eliminating the need for electrical discharge machining process.
“PTI is excited to offer this advanced technology to our customers,” said Mark Rathbone, CEO of PTI Engineered Plastics CEO.
PTI is a custom plastic injection molder and manufacturer serving the medical, aerospace/defense, automotive, electronics and consumer products industries.
