NinePoint Medical Inc., a developer of medical devices for advanced optical imaging, appointed Christopher von Jako, Ph.D., as president and CEO.
Von Jako has more than 20 years of experience in the gmedical device industry, with a focus on early-stage commercial products.
“Chris is a passionate and technology-minded individual who deeply understands the dynamics of today’s medical device field,” said Tom Miller, chairman of Cambridge, Mass.-based NinePoint’s board of directors. “We believe his commercial insights and leadership experience will be incredibly valuable to NinePoint as we continue to expand the reach of our NvisionVLE imaging system and plan for future growth.”
According to the company, the NvisionVLE system recently surpassed a milestone of 1,000 procedures completed since its launch.
NinePoint Medical’s proprietary NvisionVLE system is designed to enable physicians to endoscopically view real-time, high-resolution, volumetric images of organs and tissues up to 3 millimeters deep at 7-micron resolution. The imaging information provided by the device can be used to aid clinical decision-making relative to biopsy placement or treatment planning. NvisionVLE is indicated for use as an imaging tool in the evaluation of human tissue microstructure, including esophageal tissue microstructure, by providing two-dimensional, cross-sectional, real-time depth visualization.
Developed at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, the technology was licensed by NinePoint Medical in 2010 as part of the largest intellectual property agreement for medical device technology in the hospital’s history.
“I am very excited about the promise of this technology and the expertise of the management team, and look forward to working together to further advance NinePoint as a leader in optical imaging,” von Jako said.
Von Jako joins NinePoint from NeuroTherm, Inc., a medical device company focused on minimally invasive solutions for pain management, where he served as president and CEO. NeuroTherm was sold to St. Jude Medical in August for $200 million. Prior to NeuroTherm, he was president of ActiViews, which developed and manufactured minimally invasive navigation solutions for image-guided procedures. Earlier in his career, he served in senior executive roles of progressive responsibility with Integra LifeSciences, Covidien, Medtronic, and Radionics. He conducted his undergraduate education at Bates College, obtained a master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. from the University of Pécs Medical School.
NinePoint Medical is backed by Third Rock Ventures, Prospect Venture Partners and Corning Inc.
