Following the recent recall of various lots of its Pipeline Embolization Device and Alligator Retrieval Device, Covidien plc has earned approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its micro catheter Apollo Onyx, designed to mitigate the challenges of catheter retrieval during Onyx LES (liquid embolic system) embolizations of brain arteriovenous malformations (BAVMs). According to Covidien, Apollo Onyx is the first detachable tip micro catheter available in the Unites States.
A BAVM is an abnormal connection between arteries and veins acquired during fetal development. It occurs mainly in the brain or spine due to a tangle of abnormal arteries and veins. As per the American Heart Association, roughly one in 200–500 people (mostly males) suffer from BAVMs.
Covidien’s Apollo Onyx micro catheter helps physicians choose the best catheter position for each procedure. The catheter provides navigability through complex distal anatomy as well as a proprietary detachable tip designed for easier catheter retrieval in challenging procedures.
Recently, Covidien had to recall various lots of its Pipeline Embolization Device and Alligator Retrieval Device to address an issue in which the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating applied to the delivery wire could delaminate and detach from the devices.
Covidien is a medical device company based in Ireland, with U.S. headquarters in Mansfield, Mass.
