According to a report in the Memphis Commercial Appeal, United Kingdom-based ortho powerhouse Smith & Nephew has laid off 80 employees following the merger of its Andover, Mass.-based endoscopy unit and its Memphis, Tenn.-based orthopedic recon division.
In July, the company said it would combine the units. It also announced the resignation of reconstruction division chief Joe DeVivo (who is now the CEO of AngioDynamics).
At the time, company spokesman Andrew Burns said no cuts were planned. However, according to the newspaper, 80 jobs were cut in Memphis and another 70 worldwide.
"There were duplications in roles when we bringing these two division together," Burns was quoted in the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "You couple that with a more challenging economic and regulatory environment in some of our more established markets, it's an overall negative effect on our entire industry, not just Smith & Nephew."
The new division will be called Advanced Surgical Devices.
