A look at the sights from this year's medical technology event.

5,112 exhibitors from 68 countries will be showcasing their products and services at Medica 2016 over an exhibition space of approximately 116.000 square meters (net). Clearly structured, with each market segment assigned its own exhibition hall, Medica covers the entire range of medical equipment needs in practices and hospitals.

The German Hospital Conference is one highlight of Medica´s program. It targets decision-makers coming from the hospitals in Germany.

The wearable technology sector—“wearables” for short—has many innovations to offer that extend far beyond standard fitness tracking applications. Start-ups will be presenting exciting developments for use in medical applications at the large joint Wearable Technologies stand in Hall 15. “ADAMM” by HealthCare Originals, for instance, helps asthma sufferers to regain control of their illness. This flexible wearable is a patch equipped with a rechargeable battery that can be worn anywhere on the upper body and monitors coughing and breathing, measures temperature and heart frequency and analyses wheezing noises. Empatica, another wearables manufacturer, presents watch and wrist strap wearables. The “Embrace Watch” and the “E4 Wristband” are able to measure physiological stress and sleep arousal as well as sleep quality and physical activity. The optimum positioning of intervention needles, such as those used for biopsies, is difficult to achieve and time consuming. This task could be carried out automatically in the future: A robotic arm is used to position needle guides at the best possible introduction points through which physicians are then able to insert the needles. This type of robotic assistant—which possesses artificial intelligence to endow it with special sensitivity—would cut the time physicians require for needle positioning to just five minutes instead of the 30 minutes required up to now. Such robotic arms could, for example, be used in oncology. This specialty requires high precision for biopsy as the doctor must ensure that only the tumor is biopsied and not the healthy tissue just a few millimeters away from it. Also at the Wearable Technologies stand in Hall 15 is the “Livia” device. This wearable technology is simply clipped to the waistband for its therapeutic application. It allows menstrual pain to be simply “switched off” from there. This wearable interrupts the frequency wavelengths for menstrual pain and thus blocks transmission of the signals along the nerves to the brain.

Restful sleep is vital to health. But snoring means that people's sleep is not as healthy they may assume. This is because snoring is a breathing disorder. Sleep relaxes the muscles, which often results in the soft palate and the uvula vibrating which in turn causes snoring. In severe cases, breathing may be interrupted. This is called apneic snoring and may cause serious health problems resulting from the interruption of the air supply. The brain triggers a waking mechanism that is only perceived subconsciously. The consequences of this range from lack of concentration and daytime fatigue to high blood pressure and heart disorders. The SL 70 Snore stopper is simply clipped behind the ear can help prevent these issues. The clip detects snoring by monitoring snoring-associated and other noises transmitted through the body and issues a barely noticeable discreet signal and a vibration pulse to the ear. This doesn't wake the sleeper but encourages him or her to change sleeping position.

Premature babies usually have to be transferred to a different bed when they need an MRI scan. LMT Medical Systems in Lübeck has tackled this problem with the development of the “nomag IC” incubator system. This incubator allows newborn babies to be moved directly into MRI scanners to diagnose potential brain and organ damage. LMT is using Medica to supply this sophisticated device system to specialist clinics across the globe via international retailers. The unit was developed in close cooperation with Philips and Toshiba—both major manufacturers of MRI scanners and both are also exhibiting at Medica. See it in Hall 10.
