Bench to Bedside Innovation Competition Night
The Utah State Capital hosted the 6th annual competition event featuring student teams from the University of Utah.
The 6th Annual Bench to Bedside Event
University of Utah's Center for Medical Innovation celebrated its Bench to Bedside program teams' projects on the evening of April 4 in the rotunda of the state's capital. By the time the event was wrapping up, a number of teams took home a combined total of more than $75,000 to use toward further development of their ideas and perhaps even get it into the healthcare market. Since the program's start, 27 companies have been created, which started just like these projects in the competition.
Sybo Technology
A member of the SyboT team explains the system to a visitor. SyboT uses two cameras to simultaneously optimize surgical lighting and prevent instances of retained surgical items. One camera tracks instruments while the other detects an infrared signal emanating from the doctor's eyewear and adjusts lighting on demand. The team won the Eccles-Marriott Library Award—a $2,000 prize.
"The Pitch"
Teams present their technologies to event visitors and judges, a skill they will need to develop if they have any intention of seeking investment dollars for their project to move it along further in the development process.
TSV
A visitor listens to an explanation of the TSV technology, which offers a solution to the problem current balloon dilators have in not providing simultaneous ventilation when being used for dilating a stenotic trachea. The TSV device provides ventilation during the procedure and provides an integrated method for delivering a drug to the patient after stenosis dilation.
Cinluma
A returning Legacy team and the 2015 B2B Grand Prize winner, Cinluma addresses cervical cancer in developing countries. The heated probe of the portable, thermal coagulation device destroys lesions before they can become cancerous. This method is fast, effective, and specifically designed for use in resource-limited settings.
Fin Blade
This team developed the Fin Blade technology to address the need for an inexpensive, minimally invasive, low-risk method of carpal tunnel release. The device reduces cost, scarring, infection, and other risks associated with current methods. The student team was the first runner up in the competition and won $10,000.
Improved Neonatal Bronchoscope
Winner of the Best Global Health Innovation Award (a $5,000 prize), this team's technology was a redesign of a typical rigid bronchoscope for neonatal patients. The result redirects the airflow to the patient without sacrificing features of current devices that are available.
Project Labyrinth
Addressing the problem of suicide among U.S. military veterans, Project Labyrinth employs technology that creates a virtual environment using electroencephalogram (EEG) data in an attempt to alleviate PTSD symptoms. Patients are positively reinforced with movement, corresponding to certain regressed brain activity. The team won the Entertainment Arts and Engineering Award which put $5,000 into their pockets.
Umbilikit
The Best Engineering Award of $5,000 went to Umbilikit. This team addressed the problem of at-home and rural births in developing countries. The technology is a simple umbilical cord cutting kit for new mothers. The biodegradable flat pack kit is approximately 70 percent smaller than standard birthing kits, provides a blade-free cutting mechanism, and can be easily understood.
Barolock
This team sought to improve the effectiveness and longevity of standard ball-in-socket hip implants. Barolock won the Best Medicine Award, earning the team $5,000. The technology uses a flexible membrane attachment to reduce inflammation and decrease the chance of dislocation. The solution increases hip implant life by allowing metal-on-metal parts, reducing the need for revision surgery.
