GE HealthCare has launched Caption AI artificial intelligence (AI)-driven software for rapid cardiac assessment at the point of care on its Vscan Air SL handheld ultrasound.
The company acquired Caption Health in 2023 for an undisclosed sum. Its Vscan Air SL wireless, handheld ultrasound also rolled out in 2023.
The update to Vscan Air SL allows clinicians access to real-time, step-by-step guidance to capture diagnostic-quality images and automated ejection fraction estimation to inform decisions in cardiac settings. Vscan Air SL with Caption AI, according to GE HealthCare, was designed to lower the threshold for healthcare professionals to capture cardiac images, so even non-expert ultrasound operators can inspect patients’ hearts.
Caption AI’s real-time visual guidance prompts users on probe movements. It also features a quality meter to ensure the best possible images are captured.
Once images are captured, the AutoEF feature calculates a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Further, using the AutoCapture and Save Best Clip features, users can collect the best quality image from each view.
Vscan Air SL is made possible using GE HealthCare’s single crystal transducer technology. Caption AI joins the company’s about 60 AI-enabled medical device authorizations in the U.S. GE HealthCare claims this is more than any other medical device company. Of the 60 authorizations, about 30 are AI-enabled ultrasound technologies.
"The integration of Caption AI with the Vscan Air SL handheld ultrasound opens an entirely new chapter for cardiac screening. This technology empowers users with guidance and tools for high quality ultrasound scans and supports earlier detection of cardiac disease," said GE HealthCare’s president and CEO Roland Rott. "The strategic acquisition of Caption Health in 2023 continues to expand the capabilities of our products and solidifies our leadership in ultrasound and the emerging artificial intelligence landscape."
