ICU Medical has earned U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for its Plum Duo infusion pump with LifeShield infusion safety software. The company said the technology will be available in the U.S. early next year.
Plum Duo builds on the cassette tech in ICU Medical’s Plum 360. It has a large color touchscreen with a user interface and two channels able to deliver up to four compatible IV medications.
The LifeShield infusion safety cloud-based software suite offers new tools for comprehensive drug library management. It facilitates collaboration by enhancing the ability to access, process, and quickly share information across an enterprise or health system, the company said.
"Receiving FDA clearance for the Plum Duo pump and LifeShield software is the first step in realizing ICU Medical's long-term vision of bringing customers best-of-breed devices with a shared platform and user experience," Dan Woolson, corporate vice president and general manager of ICU Medical Infusion Systems told the press. "We are proud of this milestone and look forward to bringing our next-generation Medfusion and CADD products to the LifeShield platform, creating the most complete, precise, and technologically advanced infusion systems in the industry for our customers and their patients."
Plum Duo’s unique pumping mechanism allows accurate and precise medication delivery, with cassettes featuring ICU Medical Clave needle-free connectors to reduce infection risk. Its in-line air trap helps maintain a closed system and reduce air-in-line alarms as well.
The cloud-based IV informatics software can be deployed from a single facility to a healthcare system with centralized drug library management and reporting. The LifeShield user interface was engineered in collaboration with pharmacists and nurses, and simplified drug library and firmware deployment can be managed from a central location to ensure consistent updates.
