Dexcom has launched its Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system for people with diabetes aged two and up in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, and Hong Kong. This marks the first major milestone for the new technology.
Dexcom plans to quickly introduce G7 in New Zealand and Africa in the coming weeks, with additional markets planned after.
“Since Dexcom G6 came to market, we’ve eliminated over 15 billion fingerpricks and helped improve the lives of more than 1.25 million people with diabetes around the world. We’re thrilled to begin the global rollout of Dexcom G7, our next-generation CGM technology, that vastly improves upon what everyone loves about G6,” Kevin Sayer, chairman, president, and CEO of Dexcom told the press. “Dexcom CGM has become the gold standard of care for diabetes, and bringing our technology to more and more people around the world continues to be a top priority. With this initial launch behind us, we look forward to introducing G7 in additional markets and bringing this life-changing technology to as many people as we can.”
According to Dexcom, the low-profile, all-in-one wearable warms up more quickly than any other CGM currently on the market, warming up in 30 minutes. It sends real-time glucose readings to a compatible smart device or receiver automatically and requires no painful fingersticks or scanning.
The G7 is 60% smaller and has a 12-hour grace period to replace finished sensors for a more seamless transition. Its alert settings have been improved for more discretion. A redesigned optional receiver is smaller with and easier to read display. An anticipated future software release will also go direct to Apple Watch.
