Victrex Polymer Solutions together with Tissa Glasweberei AG have unveiled new composite fabrics to be marketed under Tissa’s brand name, Tixpref. The fabrics are made from unidirectional S-2 glass tapes, carbon fibers that have been impregnated with Victrex Peek polymer.
According to the manufacturers, the Tixpref fabrics feature:
“These characteristics exploit the outstanding performance properties of Victrex Peek polymer,” said Albert Vodermayer, European composites market leader at Victrex. “They include a service temperature of up to 260 degrees Celsius (500 degrees Farenheit), high resistance to harsh chemicals and solvents, and exceptional wear resistance, to provide superior mechanical properties under both static and dynamic load conditions. Tissa fabrics are environmentally friendly since Victrex Peek polymer is solvent-free and recyclable and being thermoplastic in nature, they can be stored at ambient temperature eliminating the need for expensive cooling and storage costs.”
Encouraged by positive client feedback, Tissa also has developed non-crimp fabrics using the same Victrex Peek polymer. Non-crimp fabrics are constructed with two sets of fibers, reinforcing the material to prevent undulation. In Tixpref’s case, this means the fibers are laid straight, allowing maximum stiffness. The fabrics can be used in medical applications that do not require complex shaped parts such as flat structures and panels. By heating the fabric prior to impregnation and press forming it for two to three minutes, a panel thickness of only 2 millimeters (0.078 inches) is possible, the company claims. The use of specialized molds enables production of sophisticated parts with strips or inserts, or both.
Victrex has its global headquarters in Lancashire, United Kingdom. The company produces high performance plastics for various industries, with its Invibio Biomaterial Solutions catering specifically to medical device manufacturers. Polymers targeted to other industries (made directly by Victrex Polymer Solutions) sometimes can have medtech applications. The company’s U.S. headquarters is located in West Conshohocken, Pa.
Tissa Glasweberei AG produces fibreglass textiles and is based in Germany.
According to the manufacturers, the Tixpref fabrics feature:
- Thermoplasticity. They are designed to have a high tolerance for damage when compared with thermoset-based fabrics;
- High fatigue strength and stiffness;
- Seamless integration of the fiber within the matric; and
- Easy, safe handling capacity.
