Show Preview: MDDExpo 2007
In an industry where the trade show business generally is managed by revenue growth projections, the Medical Device and Design Expo (MDDExpo) is a refreshing alternative. This annual event will be held Sept. 18-19 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Launched in 2002, the MDDExpo began as a means for connecting suppliers and buyers in a then-underserved market. Since the company that initiated MDDExpo was not a trade show management company, but a medical device company whose main interest was providing a venue for education and sourcing, maximizing profit has never been a primary driver, according to the event’s creator, Beahm Designs in Campbell, CA. The event, the company said, will provide attendees and exhibitors with educational and compelling content tailored to meet their needs.
The growth rate for this event has been exponential. From the eight exhibitors at the inaugural exposition to close to 100 scheduled for this year, the MDDExpo has grown in size and reputation. In spite of the potential, the targeted focus remains consistent.
“We don’t foresee expanding the size of this event much beyond what we’ve achieved,” explained Anita Beahm, founder of MDDExpo. “We’re not trying to be all things to all people. We plan to continue to offer highly specialized content and resources to our medical device audience—we don’t want to dilute that focus.”
The conference portion of the MDDExpo will offer consecutive sessions scheduled throughout both days of the event. Topics will cover many areas of interest, including advancements in medical balloon technology, an R&D expert panel discussion and frontline perspectives from surgical fellows at Stanford Biodesign.
This year’s select keynote speakers cover the industry spectrum as well, from manufacturing and design expertise to advice for start-ups seeking funding.
“We poll attendees each year to determine how to best shape the program for the following year based upon their needs and interests,” Beahm noted. Highlights this year include the Prototype Challenge, for which participants submit a component design for evaluation by a panel of design experts. The winning entry will be chosen based on ingenuity and application, she said, and actually fabricated using a 3-D modeling printer for display on the day of the show.
Among the sponsors for the event is Medical Product Outsourcing.
